DIN rail power supply, the central unit for power distribution, adopts AC line voltage and converts it into DC voltage, which is located in the electrical cabinet installed on the DIN rail. The standard dimension Z of the metal belt was initially defined in the specification published by “Deutsche institutf ü R Normung” (DIN) in Germany, and later adopted as European (EN) and international (IEC) standards.
Since DIN rail is a globally recognized standard, users can use various components. Relay, contactor, multiplier, circuit breaker, power supply and other system components can be conveniently installed on the practical 35mm guide rail. This means that even complex systems can be implemented quickly and safely.
DIN rail power supply is usually used for control panels and electrical cabinets to provide industry standard 12V, 24V or 48VDC. Applications include: motors, valves, solenoids or nonlinear loads, whose starting current may be very high. Generally, they need to be certified by UL standard 508 safety and performance standards to meet factory automation and ul60950 general power standards.
Not surprisingly, the price of DIN rail modules has become so low due to “economies of scale” and fierce competition, so they are becoming more and more attractive for smart home applications, security technology and building automation.

  • Input and output

In order to ensure global compatibility, it is recommended to find a wide AC input voltage range, cover most line voltages, and accept a wide frequency range.
The adjustable output is designed for specific requirements in test and development applications, but the typical output voltage is stable 12V, 24V or 48VDC industry standard. 24VDC seems to have become the standard supply voltage for the entire automation technology – from mechanical engineering to telecommunications to the oil and gas industry.
Relays, solenoids and control valves can be used with 24VDC and hydraulic or pneumatic actuators. The same applies to various sensors of pressure, temperature, flow or liquid level, as well as most gateways, programmable controllers and bus systems. Based on a market analysis of approximately 100000 DIN rail power supplies sold, it is assumed that the sales volume of modules with 24VDC output is more than four times that of all other modules combined – followed by 12VDC applications.

  • Operating temperature range

One of the main advantages of DIN rail system is how to save space, and the whole cabinet can be installed at extreme temperature. Integrated cooling fans in these sealed enclosures are almost impossible, so the power supply must be designed to operate in extreme temperatures without them. This is why DIN rail PSUs can usually work in a wide temperature range. When reducing the output power (derating), most PSUs can operate at higher temperatures according to the derating diagram.

  • Protection type

DIN rail PSUs may be affected by electrical errors from the main power supply or connected loads. This is why various security functions are required when errors occur. The protection of short circuit, overvoltage, over temperature and overload is very important for reliable operation. Some DIN rail PSUs have hiccup protection function, in which the equipment automatically resumes operation after error, and others need to be restarted manually.

  • Efficiency and no-load power consumption

In enclosed cabinets without forced cooling, any additional heat dissipation will cause the temperature at which some components stop working. Therefore, it is recommended that the central DIN rail power supply has a high efficiency of 89%, so as to keep the heat dissipation at the low level of Z. Low no-load power consumption also helps to reduce additional heat dissipation.

  • UL 508 industrial control equipment standard

DIN rail PSUs sold for the U.S. market must comply with Underwriters Laboratories national / international standard UL 508, which specifies the use of all industrial control equipment, such as power supply, selector switch, relay, contactor, motor starter and including such components. This standard includes devices up to 1500 V and is intended for ambient temperatures typically 0 – 40 ° C.

  • Connection and wiring

In general, all conductors connected to the PSU shall be designed with Z large cross section and Z short cable length. This is to Z minimize the cable loss on the load side to prevent adding heat to the cabinet. From the main power supply side, the influence of noise can be Z greatly reduced.
Parallel operation and phase redundancy
